The magnificent image above comes courtesy of Gloucestershire Live, who have delved deep into the history books to remember how our city looked back in the 1920s.

Where the bustling Eastgate Shopping Centre now sits used to lie the infamous Bell Hotel, one of the leading and oldest hotels in the county. If, like me, you’re of a certain age, you might remember attending a function or two at the old Bell, or even attending one of their ballroom soirees.

Those with a discerning eye may remember the large bell that adorned this Southgate Street hotel, and here’s a bit of interesting trivia for you on a wet February morning, the whopping 14lb decoration is now part of my interesting collection of Gloucestershire memorabilia.

Rest assured it’s well looked after and makes an appearance once a year at the Barton mayor-making procession.
